PHOENIX, Ariz. – DECEMBER 8, 2018 – Today, The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce that running back Bijan Robinson of Salpointe High School in Tucson was named the 2018 Ed Doherty Award recipient at a formal luncheon. Members of the GCSGC Ed Doherty Award Selection Committee chose Robinson based on his outstanding performance throughout the 2018 season. Fifty-one athletes were nominated for the award, which is the highest performance honor that an Arizona high school football player can earn.

“All of the nominees are great players that deserve to be here. To them I say, ‘keep balling, keep going,’ said Robinson during his acceptance speech. “Thank you to Coach Bene who has stuck with me since I was a freshman and has always encouraged me to trust my instincts and be the best that I can be.”

Robinson, who was a 2017 nominee, was named on GCSGC’s 47-player Watch List released on September 5, 2018. With a 2,245-yard, 34-touch down effort this season, he led the Lancers back to the 4A state final rematch with Saguaro High School. His final season stats (including 4A final):

  • 170 carries

  • 2,400 yards

  • 35 touchdowns

  • 11 100+ yard games

  • 14.1 yards per carry

  • 184.6 yards per game.

“As impressive as his stats are, Bijan remains humble amidst the accolades and credits his teammates, coaches and family for his success,” said Ward Hickey, selection committee co-chair. “GCSGC is proud to have him in the Ed Doherty Award Club, and we look forward to seeing what he accomplishes during his senior year.”
