The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 10 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Six players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, October 22, 2021: Brendan Anderson (Jr. QB, Mountain Ridge); Cooper French (Sr. RB, Coconino); Grady Hickey (Sr. WR, Chaparral); Javen Jacobs (Sr. ATH, Saguaro); Wyatt Milkovic (Jr. LB, Basha); and Will Weber (Sr. QB, Sequoia Pathway).
Two of the six players were named on the 55-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 7, 2021. All eight players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 18, 2021, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.
Details on their individual performances on October 22nd are as follows:
Brendan Anderson – Jr. RB – Mountain Ridge
The junior QB for the Mountain Lions helped his team bounce back from a homecoming loss last week by going 26/43 for 2349yds and 5TDs in a 42-14 win over Valley Vista. He now leads all 6A QBs with 27 TD passes on the season.
Cooper French – Sr. RB – Coconino
In a 28-14 win over Mingus, French set a school record for the Panthers with 38 carries for 310yds and 3TDs, becoming only the 5th playing in Flagstaff ever to eclipse 300yds rushing.
Grady Hickey – Sr. WR – Chaparral
The senior has been the go-to target for the Firebirds and he delivered once again in a hard fought 41-37 loss to Liberty. He caught 13 passes for 158yds and 2TDs, giving him 935yds receiving on the season and 9 total TDs.
Javen Jacobs – Sr. ATH – Saguaro
One of the state's most versatile athletes delivered again for the Sabercats in a 43-23 win over Horizon. He caught 9 passes for 192yds and a TD, rushed 7 times for 52yds and 2TDs, threw a TD pass and added 86 return yards for 330ysds of total yards.
Wyatt Milkovic – Jr. LB – Basha
The junior LB was all over the field in the Bears' 24-13 win over Highland, recording 10 tackles, 1TFL and caused a fumble to keeping Basha undefeated.
Will Weber – Sr. QB – Sequoia Pathway
Weber tied the 2A record for TD passes in a game by completing 12/20 passes for 373yds and 9TDs in 69-0 win over Santa Rita.

For 35 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.
