PHOENIX, Ariz. – September 20, 2022 – The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 5 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Six players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, September 16, 2022: Gage Baker (Jr. QB – Paradise Honors); Emiliano Berthely (Jr. RB – Douglas); Chase Brown (Fr. QB, Flagstaff); Cayden Gibson (Jr. DE – Arizona College Prep); Dax Hall (Jr. RB – Higley); and Ca’lil Valentine (Jr. RB – Chandler).
Two of the six players were named on the 71-player Week 3 Watch Listâ„¢ released on September 6, 2022. All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 17, 2022, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.
Details on their individual performances on September 16th are as follows:
Gage Baker – Jr. QB – Paradise Honors
Baker led the Panthers to a 52-26 win over Bourgade Catholic completing 26 of 35 passes for 334yds and 5TDs.
Emiliano Berthely – Jr. RB – Douglas
Playing his first game of the season, Berthely rumbled for 308yds on 22 carries, with 4TDs in a 56-49 win over Cholla.
Chase Brown – Fr. QB – Flagstaff
Making his first varsity start for the Eagles, Brown completed 15 of 18 passes for 405yds and a school-record 6TDs in a 56-12 win over Rio Rico.
Cayden Gibson - Jr. DE – Arizona College Prep
In a 28-20 win over Waldon Grove, Gibson recorded 6 sacks for the 2nd consecutive game (12 total on the season), equaling the record he set last week. He also tallied 8 tackles for Knights in the victory.
Dax Hall – Jr. RB – Higley
Hall amassed 224yds and 3TDs on 12 carries, while adding 8 receptions for 105yds and 2TDs in the Knights' 57-35 win over previously undefeated Sunnyslope.
Ca'lil Valentine – Jr. RB – Chandler
Valentine led the Wolves in a 35-0 road win over Notre Dame Prep with his 3rd straight 100+ rushing effort totaling 224yds on 17 carries with 4TDs.
