PHOENIX, Ariz. – October 25, 2022 – The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 10 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Five players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, October 21, 2022: Bryan Ballard (Jr. DB – Central); Cooper Perry (So. WR – Notre Dame); Brandon Phelps (Jr. WR – ALA Gilbert North); Duce Robinson (Sr. TE – Pinnacle); and Timothy Tynan (Jr. K – Basha).
One of the five players was named on the 71-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 6, 2022. All five players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 17, 2022, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.
Details on their individual performances on October 21st are as follows:
Bryson Ballard – Jr. DB – Central
In a 27-20 win over Betty Fairfax, Ballard had 10 tackles, two interceptions, returning one back 72 yards, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
Cooper Perry – So. WR – Notre Dame
In a 44-23 Saints win over Sunnyslope, Perry had 10 catches for 229 yards and four touchdowns, and had a 47-yard scoring run. It was his fourth four-TDs-receiving game of the season for the top ranked team in 5A.
Brandon Phelps – Jr. WR – ALA Gilbert North
Phelps caught nine passes for 236 yards and three TDs in a 47-7 rout of Arizona College Prep, which was ranked No. 1 in 4A by the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) last week.
Duce Robinson – Sr. TE – Pinnacle
Robinson, the nation’s No. 1 ranked tight end, had nine receptions for 223 and the eventual game winning touchdown late in Pinnacle’s 18-14 victory over Brophy.
Timothy Tynan – JR. K – Basha
Tynan nailed four field goals, including the game-winning 40-yarder as time expired to beat Chandler Hamilton 26-23. He was perfect on all four of his FG attempts, 2 for 2 on PATs and made the game winner after being pushed back 15 yards after Hamilton tried to ice him a second time with a time out.
