Broscious, Daily, Dayley, Madrigal & SmithEarn Week 13 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™


The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 13 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Five players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, November 12, 2021: Gavin Broscious (Sr. OL, Desert Edge); Stephon Daily (Jr. WE, Sierra Linda); Gage Dayley (Sr. QB, Highland); Isaac Madrigal (Sr. QB, Tolleson); and Gavin Smith (Sr. WR/P, Notre Dame Prep).


Four of the five players were named on the 55-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 7, 2021. All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 18, 2021, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.


Details on their individual performances on November 5th are as follows:


Gavin Broscious – Sr. OL – Desert Edge

The top offensive lineman in Arizona who headed to Michigan State has protected his QB Adryan Lara for 4 years, allowing him to throw for over 10,000yds passing, and paved the way for the Scorpions to rush for 1,500yds this season.


Stephon Daily – Jr. WR – Sierra Linda

Daily capped of the season with 7 receptions for 111yds and a TD in the Bulldogs 56-16 win over Washington to clinch the Copper Sky region title and finish 8-2. His 991 receiving yards and 12TDs set a school record.


Gage Dayley – Sr. QB – Highland

The senior QB locked up the #1 seed for the Hawks in 6A leading the way to a 38-17 win over Casteel by going 20 of 23 passing for 291yds and 4TDs.


Isaac Madrigal – Sr. QB – Tolleson

The energy behind the resurgence at Tolleson started with their QB, who accounted for 1,965 total yards and 25TDs (15pass/10rush) as the Wolverines captured the Desert Southwest region and finished 7-3 after not having a 2020 season.


Gavin Smith – Sr. WR/P – Notre Dame Prep

The all-purpose athlete for the Saints tallied 960 total yards as a receiver and return specialist, 8TDs and averaged 42yds per punt.

For 35 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics.
