PHOENIX, Ariz. – November 1, 2022 – The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 11 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Five players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, October 28, 2022: Kavaughn Clark (Sr. RB – Centennial); David Lopez (Sr. RB – Brophy Prep); Cole Martin (Sr. DB – Basha); Wyatt Milkovic (Sr. LB – Basha); and Cristian Pando (Sr. RB – Willcox).
Four of the five players were named on the 71-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 6, 2022. All five players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 17, 2022, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.
Details on their individual performances on October 28th are as follows:
Kavaughn Clark – Sr. RB – Centennial
Clark ran for 230 yards and three TDs in a 30-17 win over Mountain Ridge to improve the Coyotes to 7-1 heading into a showdown with undefeated Liberty.
David Lopez – Sr. RB – Brophy
Lopez ran for 247 yards and a TD on 32 carries, and he threw a touchdown pass in a win over Desert Vista. It was his second straight game rushing for more than 200 yards for the Broncos.
Cole Martin – Sr. DB – Basha
Martin had 18 tackles and two passes defensed in the Bears’ win over previously undefeated Chandler.
Wyatt Milkovic – Sr. LB – Basha
In a 14-7 win over top-ranked Chandler, Milkovic had 19 tackles, two for losses, and deflected the pass in the end that resulted in a game-sealing interception.
Cristian Pando – Sr. RB – Willcox
Pando ran for personal best 342 yards and six touchdowns on 30 carries in a 55-6 win over Tucson Tanque Verde that gave the Cowboys the 2A San Pedro Region championship.
