Daniels, Harris, Johnson, Johnson, Millner, Tate & Young Earn Week 9 Medallions

The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 9 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions. Seven players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, October 18, 2019: Kevin Daniels (Sr. RB, Glendale HS); Jason Harris (Sr. DE, Higley HS); Christian Johnson (Jr. RB, Greenway HS); JD Johnson (Sr. QB, Pinnacle HS); Kai Millner (Jr. QB, Higley HS); Bryce Tate (Sr. WR/DB, McClintock HS); and Jaydin Young (Sr. ATH, Centennial HS).

“The stakes have increased in Week 9 with playoff implications factored into every game and these players are delivering spectacular performances when their teams need it most,” said Rob Yowell, Selection Committee Chair. “These six young men represent the best of a talented group this week and deserve their official nominations for the Ed Doherty Award.”

Daniels, JD Johnson and Young were named on the 56-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 10, 2019. All eight players will receive their Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning these Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 14, 2019 where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.

Details on their individual performances on October 18th are as follows:

Kevin Daniels – Sr. RB – Glendale High School

In a thrilling 49-48 OT win over Combs, Kevin Daniels logged 13 carries for 158yds and 3TDs, caught 3 passes for 42yds and completed a 17yd pass to his QB. Through Week 9, Daniels has over 1,700 all-purpose yards and 27TDs on the season.

Jason Harris – Sr. DE – Higley High School

Jason Harris leads 5A in sacks with 15 in 6 games played through Week 9. In the Knights' 52-30 win over Campo Verde, Harris recorded 5 tackles, 2 TFL, one sack and recovered a fumble.

Christian Johnson – Jr. RB – Greenway High School

In the Demons' Week 9 35-10 win over St. Mary's, Christian Johnson carried the ball 23 times for 193yds and 2TDs, pushing his season totals to 1,322yds and 20TDs.

JD Johnson – Sr. QB – Pinnacle High School

The Pioneers' senior quarterback has performed all season. In a key Week 9 game against Liberty he posted 17/26 for 342yds and 4TDs in a 41-17 victory over the Lions.

Kai Millner – Jr. QB – Higley High School

Millner led the Knights in a Week 9 win over Camp Verde. The junior completed 20/26 passes for 288yds and 5TDs, and an additional 40yds on the ground.

Bryce Tate – Sr. WR/DB – McClintock High School

Bryce Tate played both sides of the ball for the McClintock Chargers in a 49-0 Week 9 win over Paradise Valley. He recorded 6 tackles, 4 INTs (one for a TD) and added 5 catches for 150yds receiving and 2TDs.

Jaydin Young – Sr. ATH – Centennial High School

Jaydin Young continues to led the Coyotes in their 49-0 win over Ironwood during Week 9. Young recorded 90yds of total offense, rushed for a TD, broke up a pass and tallied 3 tackles. Young has over 1,000yds of offense and 8TDs to go with 47 tackles, 1 fumble recovery and an INT.

For 32 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics.
