Davis, Flores, Lucas, Marshall, Morris & Stopke Earn Week 12 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™

The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 12 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Six players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, November 5, 2021: Russel Davis II (Sr. DE, Hamilton); Angel Flores (Sr. QB, Casa Grande); Anthony Lucas (Sr. DE, Chaparral) Xavier Marshall (Sr. DE, Tolleson); Andrew Morris (Sr. WR/LB, Mesquite); and Isaac Stopke (Jr. RB, Lake Havasu).


Four of the six players were named on the 55-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 7, 2021. All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 18, 2021, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.


Details on their individual performances on November 5th are as follows:


Russell Davis II – Sr. DE – Hamilton

In a 58-17 win over Higley, Davis wreaked havoc with 9 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 3 sacks and forced 2 fumbles. His season totals of 18 sacks and 22.5 TFL are both school records.


Angel Flores – Sr. QB – Casa Grande

In leading the Cougars to a perfect 10-0 regular season capped off with a 50-7 win over Arcadia, Flores accounted for 4 TD (3 pass/1rush) for the game and finished the season with 38 total TDs and 2600+ total yards.


Anthony Lucas – Sr. DE – Chaparral

As the state's top recruit, Lucas has spent all season dealing with double & triple teams but came up big in the Firebirds' 48-6 win over Centennial with 8 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks and forced a fumble.


Xavier Marshall – Sr. RB – Tolleson

The Wolverines earned their first regional title since 2002 with a 53-24 win over Trevor Browne, Marshall powered the ground game with 207yds on 22 carries and 4 TDs.


Andrew Morris – Sr. WR/LB – Mesquite

One of the state’s top two-way players, Morris displayed his skills on both sides of the ball in the Wildcats' 47-10 victory over Benjamin Franklin. He totaled 16 tackles, one interception and hauled in a 30yd TD reception.


Isaac Stopke – Jr. RB – Lake Havasu

The Knights RB was unstoppable in their 48-31 win at Coconino with 25 carries for 312yds and 5TDs, running his season totals to 1,426yds rushing and 27TDs.

For 35 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics.
