Finch, Hubler, Klophenstein, Lynch, Marchiol, Wallace Earn Week 5 EDA Nomination Medallions



The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 5 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Six players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, September 17, 2021: Ryan Finch (Sr. QB – Mountain Ridge); Logan Hubler (Sr. QB, ALA-Queen Creek); Matthew Klophenstein (Jr. TE/DE, Horizon); Tad Lynch (Sr. RB/FS, Coolidge); Nicco Marchiol (Sr. QB, Hamilton), and Zach Wallace (Jr. RB, Liberty).


All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 18, 2021, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.


Details on their individual performances on September 17th are as follows:


Ryan Finch – Sr. QB – Mountain Ridge

With the Mountain Lions' starting QB out injured, Finch stepped up to lead his team to a 39-34 comeback win over Centennial. He finished 15-27 passing for 215yds and 5TDs, and added 88yds rushing and another TD.


Logan Hubler – Sr. QB – ALA Queen Creek

In a 66-28 win over Buckeye, Hubler led the Patriots with 20-25 passing for 359yds and 6TDs.


Matthew Klophenstein – Jr. TE/DE – Horizon

The junior caught the game-winning TD pass in OT to give the Huskies a 31-30 win over Desert Edge, finishing with 5 catches for 36yds and 2TDs while adding 2 solo tackles on defense.


Tad Lynch – Sr. RB/FS – Coolidge

In leading the Bears to a 49-13 win over Phoenix Christian, Lynch rushed 18 times for 366yds, 6TDs and added a 2pt conversion on offense. He also tallied 5 tackles and a sack on defense.


Nicco Marchiol – Sr. QB – Hamilton

With a national TV audience watching, Marchiol threw 2 TD passes and scored a 2pt conversion in the final minute to lead the Huskies to a 25-25 win over Bishop Gorman. He finished 16-23 passing for 158yds and 2TDs, plus an additional 83yds rushing on 16 carries and 1TD.


Zach Wallace – Jr. RB – Liberty

The Lions RB rushed 19 times for 110yds and 3TDs (including the game winner in OT) in a 41-38 thriller over rival Sunrise Mountain.

For 36 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics.
